Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship of motivation, cognition, and emotional regulation in depression and anxiety. In particular, mediating effect of rumination and worry in relationship between behavior inhibition system and negative emotion including depression and anxiety was examined. For this purpose, a series of questionnaires including Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward Questionnaire(SPSRQ), Korean Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire(K-BVAQ), Beck Depression Inventory-second edition(BDI-II), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI), Ruminative Response Scale(RRS), and Penn State Worry Questionnaire(PSWQ) were conducted on 243 university students. The data from 200 students excluding unfaithful responses were analyzed through structure equation. As a result, behavior inhibition system affected depression and anxiety, and the process was mediated by cognitive mechanisms including rumination and worry. This result suggested that motivational characteristics of individual causes non-adaptive emotion through rumination and worry, and thus in treatment, exploration of individual¡¯s motivation is required before cognitive intervention. In addition, the result showed that anxiety was affected by difficulty in naming of emotion. In other words, worry affected anxiety through the process of difficulty in naming of emotion. This result suggested that a therapist can involve in treatment more effectively by focusing on recognition and naming of emotion of the client who complains discomfort caused by worry. The limitations of the present study and suggestions for further studies were discussed.
